Welcome to LGTCP101: Introduction to Microsoft Copilot for Legal Professionals. This course is designed specifically for attorneys, paralegals, and legal staff at small law firms who are ready to take their first confident steps into the world of AI-powered legal practice. Over the next 75 minutes, you will gain a practical, grounded understanding of Microsoft Copilot — what it is, how it works, how to use it effectively, and how to use it responsibly.

The legal profession is at a pivotal moment. Artificial intelligence is no longer a futuristic concept reserved for large BigLaw firms with massive technology budgets. Today, AI tools are embedded directly into the Microsoft 365 applications that most small law firms already use every day — Word, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, and Excel. Microsoft Copilot is the AI assistant that lives inside those applications, and it is available to your firm right now.

Why This Training Matters

The ABA’s 2023 TechReport found that only 11% of lawyers at firms with fewer than 10 attorneys had used AI tools in their practice. Yet the same report found that attorneys who do use AI tools report significant time savings — often 20 to 40 percent on routine drafting and document review tasks. The gap between early adopters and those who have not yet started is widening rapidly. This training is designed to close that gap for you and your firm.

More importantly, the ABA’s Model Rules of Professional Conduct — specifically Rule 1.1 on Competence — have been interpreted by most state bars to include a duty to understand the technology you use in practice. As AI tools become more prevalent in legal work, the question is no longer whether attorneys should understand AI, but how quickly they can develop that understanding. This course gives you the foundational knowledge you need to meet that professional obligation.

What You Will Be Able to Do After This Course

By the end of this 75-minute session, you will be able to accomplish the following:

Explain what Microsoft Copilot is and identify where it appears in your Microsoft 365 environment. You will understand the difference between Copilot Work (your secure enterprise environment) and Copilot Web (the public-facing version), and you will know which one to use for client matters.

Recognize which legal workflows benefit most from Copilot assistance. From drafting motions and summarizing depositions to managing client communications and organizing discovery, you will be able to identify the highest-value opportunities for AI assistance in your specific practice.

Demonstrate effective prompting techniques. Writing a good AI prompt is a skill, and like all skills, it can be learned and improved with practice. You will learn the five-element framework for crafting prompts that consistently produce high-quality, relevant results.

Apply professional responsibility and validation standards. You will understand your ethical obligations when using AI tools in legal practice, and you will be able to apply the six-step mandatory validation checklist to every piece of AI-generated content before using it in your work product.

Navigate security, permissions, and ethical considerations. You will understand how Microsoft Copilot protects client data through tenant isolation, permission enforcement, and compliance integration — and you will know what to do (and what not to do) to maintain client confidentiality.

How This Course Is Structured

This course is organized into six sections that build on one another logically. We begin with the foundational concepts — what Copilot is and why it matters for small firms — then move through live demonstrations, prompting techniques, security architecture, ethics and validation, and finally daily workflow integration and next steps.

Each section includes instructional content, real-world examples from legal practice, and hands-on exercises where you will apply what you have learned. The exercises are designed to be practical and immediately applicable to your work. You will not be doing abstract technology exercises — you will be practicing with the same types of documents and communications you work with every day.

This 17-page reference guide contains everything covered in this training, including the five-element prompt framework, the six-step validation checklist, a library of sample prompts organized by legal task, quick reference charts comparing Copilot Work and Copilot Web, and a three-month implementation roadmap. Keep it handy during the course and refer to it whenever you need a reminder after the training is complete.

A Note on Professional Responsibility

Every piece of AI-generated content you use in your legal work product must be reviewed, verified, and approved by you before it goes out the door. You are responsible for your work product, whether it was generated by a human associate, a paralegal, or an AI assistant.

This is not a reason to avoid AI tools — it is a reason to use them thoughtfully and with appropriate safeguards. The attorneys who will thrive in the AI era are not those who blindly delegate everything to AI, nor those who refuse to use AI at all. They are the attorneys who understand how to use AI as a powerful tool that amplifies their professional judgment and expertise.
